Current world events can often contribute to feelings of overwhelm, anger, and conflict. Especially during the holiday season we become more aware of the struggles that others are facing. This can add to our own personal stress and it becomes easy to slide into energy states that further increase our negative feelings. Allowing these mental or emotional states to take hold really does nothing for us. At best they can propel us toward some action that may be helpful but it is possible to take “right action” and still having a low energy state lurking that is not best for us. For many there can be a resulting inner state of turmoil, stress and mental, emotional and physical weakness as we hold awareness of our stress coupled with the world’s ills. It is a matter of consciousness to be able to hold negative feelings in such a way that they can move through our field, be released and then be able to shift to a higher state.
At first glance it may seem uncaring to focus on shifting to a higher state of consciousness when so many are suffering so much. But we may ask, ‘how does it serve another to feel downtrodden, sad, and angry or grief stricken in response to the difficulties in our own or others’ lives? We can best only help ourselves and others if we function from a position of health, strength and calmness.
So while we do what we can in terms of donations of time, money or service to those in need, we also need to take notice of our mental and emotional states. It is easy to become caught in emotional loops and thus feel as that we are participating, caring or helping. It takes clarity and awareness to maintain an inner state of strength, peace, happiness and hope.
Subtle Trauma
We live in a time when communication brings us right to the point of action. Television and the Internet inform us of events a world away. While quite wonderful in many levels, there is a down side! Watching television puts us in a receptive state like the one used in hypnosis. As a result we are a prime target for many unwanted effects especially from a steady diet of opinion, horror, trauma, grief, and violence. Many people become emotionally numbed as a result.
Secondary trauma is a state that affects people who observe traumatic events. They are affected at lesser levels that the direct victims of trauma BUT affected they are! So in the same way we all feel the pain, grief and loss as we view repeated images of tragedy around the world.
No question that being informed is crucial, but how many times do you need to see the same horror, or different versions of it, to know and understand what has happened? Repeated watching, staying abreast of minute details of a tragedy is compelling but it can harm us as well as lull us into thinking we are involved and doing something worthwhile.
Carolyn Myss, a well-known energy teacher, once said that there would come a day when we would give each other gifts of energy. Prayer may be the most common way people understand this concept. Prayer has been shown to be effective to those it is sent to —-in double blind studies even— the benchmark of western belief! AND consciousness has been shown to be non-local —more double blind activity and surprisingly, your tax dollars at work! Prayer harnesses the power of intention…of consciousness ….so your prayers and wishes of heartfelt compassion, hope, and healing can make a difference in giving people strength and energy to move through challenging times…AND they strengthen you at the same time! Remember to include yourself in your good wishes, hold yourself in healthy esteem and honor your Self. This inner stance helps you to come from a point of power in the present moment to benefit all.
